Welcome to the Western Slope Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory!
The Western Slope Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory (WSVDL) located in Grand Junction, CO is a western Colorado branch of the main
laboratory the Colorado State University Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory which is located on the campus of Colorado State University
in Fort Collins, CO.
The WSVDL provides laboratory services in animal disease diagnostic testing for the veterinarians and animal owners of Colorado's
Western Slope and the surrounding areas. As a branch laboratory, the WSVDL is not a full service facility. The laboratory offers local
services that would be difficult to obtain at a distance or those services especially critical to animal rearing and production in western
Colorado. This includes gross pathology examinations (post-mortem or necropsy), histopathology examinations including surgical biopsies,
bacterial isolation and susceptibility testing, cytology and parasitology examinations including Tritrichomonas culturing and serologic
testing for Equine Infectious Anemia (Coggin's test, AGID) and Brucella ovis (ELISA).
Samples received for other tests are forwarded to the main laboratory or other reference laboratories as needed.
It is highly recommended that if you are an animal owner, that you contact your local veterinary practitioner to determine if and how you
might best use the services of the WSVDL.
The WSVDL also cooperates with the Colorado Division of Wildlife to provide testing for
chronic wasting disease (CWD) in hunter-killed wild elk, deer and moose. See the Colorado Division of Wildlife
website or publications for the current regulations and recommendations.
The WSVDL can supply area veterinarians with formalin jars and mailers for small biopsies, and mailers for blood tubes for sample submission to
this laboratory. Please call us if you are in need of any of these supplies.
